Everyday we face a lot of distractions.  A LOT!

And it’s how we deal with these distractions that determines how successful we are.

So, before creating your daily to-do list (which I ALWAYS do), lets take a look at 5 things not-to-do.  This will free up the time necessary to get those important things done and enjoy life.

Do NOT Constantly Check Your Email

Nothing kills productivity like constantly checking your email and responding to messages.  Have you ever emailed somebody and waited at least a day to get a response?  Good.  We all have and it’s OK.  So, don’t feel like you have some sort of obligation to respond to emails asap.

Check your emails in batches – two or three times per day tops. This will leave you more time to check off those items on your to-do list.

Do NOT Enable Notifications On Your Smart Phone

If your like most people, you’re smart phone is connected to all of your email accounts, your twitter,Facebook and the list goes on.  If you have your phone setup to notify you every time you get a new message or somebody likes your Facebook post, then you will never get anything.  You can check your email and social accounts in batches just like I mentioned above – two or three times per day.

Do NOT Try To Do Everything Yourself

This is a tough one for some people, especially those who like to be in control. But, some tasks SHOULD be delegated to others.  Take a look at your to-do list and rank them by importance.  I bet there’s at least one or two items that could be delegated or outsourced.  There are many services on the web that offer cheap outsourcing, you just have to figure out which is more important – your time or your money!  Realize that outsourcing for cheap may free up your time to make more money in the long run.

Do NOT Try To Please Everybody

As Colin Powell once said, “Trying to get everyone to like you is a sign of mediocrity.” And most importantly, it’s impossible, so don’t sweat it.  Spend your time and energy on things you can control and people who deserve your attention.

Do NOT Try To Get Through The Day Without Clear Goals

What are your goals for today?  How ’bout this month? Or year?  If you can’t answer these questions then you have some work to do.  You can’t reach a destination if you don’t know where you’re going, so take some time and set clear goals! Write your goals down and keep track of when you reach these milestones.  That’s how progress is made!
