WordPress SEO Made Easy
There’s 1,001 definitive guides to wordpress SEO out there…
Teaching you how to tweak every little aspect from meta tags, to headings to keyword density (yes, some people still worry about this).
But, this isn’t one of them!
Listen, I don’t like to waste a lot of time optimizing my on-page SEO…
Yet, I still have thousands of pages from multiple sites sitting at the top of Google!
So, I’m going to show you how to setup your WordPress powered blog so all that pesky SEO stuff is already taken care of…
That’s right, set it and forget it and concentrate on more important things like growing your business or creating valuable and interesting content.
This isn’t ground-breaking stuff here. However, people tend to unnecessarily over complicate things.
But, enough of me rambling…
1. Upload the Thesis Theme
I’m not one of those die-hard Thesis fanboys, but I will tell you this; if you want simplicity at it’s finest and an SEO optimized theme out of the box, then get Thesis. Is it absolutely necessary? Most things in life aren’t, but like electricity and indoor plumbing, it will make things a lot easier for you.
2. Install the WordPress SEO plugin
If there was only one plugin I could install on all my WordPress sites this would be it. This powerful plugin by Yoast is actually like a million different plugins in one. It incorporates everything from a complete SEO page analysis, ability to control title tags, add breadcrumbs, create XML sitemaps, edit your robots.txt and .htaccess and a lot more! If you’re currently using a different SEO plugin then don’t worry, you can still upload WordPress SEO and import the settings from your old plugin into this plugin.
Seriously, that’s all there is to it. Forget about all the BS those “guru’s” told you and instead spend your time creating AWESOME content, building relationships with your readers and other site owners and, if you want, follow these link building strategies to get quality backlinks! It’s THESE factors that REALLY count!
How To Create An SEO Optimized Blog In 7 Minutes
I created this video to show you how easy it is to create an SEO optimized blog from scratch in only 7 minutes! This video walks you through the entire process from buying your domain, setting up your hosting, installing wordpress, to optimizing your site! I even show you how to publish your first post in case you’re new to the WordPress platform.
Resources mentioned in the video:
- BlueHost hosting
- Thesis theme
- Wordress SEO plugin
A few things of note:
- I haven’t written a meta description or added a meta tag to any of my sites in years. GASP! And I still have thousands of pages in the number spot in Google. I’ve done a little testing to see if adding a meta description helped click through rates and found that it had no affect at all.
- All the SEO in the world isn’t going to help if you’re site sucks. Well, let me take that back, you CAN get a shitty site to the first page of google with enough backlinks, but it’s not likely to sit there long nor convert visitors into subscribers/buyers.
- The only two elements of on-page SEO that I frequently take into consideration are my Title tags and deep linking, which is basically linking to other posts/pages on your site. The WordPress SEO plugin makes choosing a title easy by offering suggestions based on keywords people are searching for. SEO Smart Links is a pretty cool plugin that automatically adds deep links to your posts and pages. It’s not necessary, and I don’t use it on this blog, but if you already have an established blog with hundreds of pages of content it makes it easy to quickly add deep links to those pages.
